Tell us about your trustee role – what does it involve?

As a trustee for an anti-poverty charity, my role involves guiding the organization and making sure it stays focused on its mission. I help make key decisions about strategy, where funds should go, and which projects will have the most impact. I also keep an eye on finances, make sure we’re following the law, and manage any risks that might come up.

Part of my job is to act as an ambassador for the charity, promoting our work, building connections, and supporting fundraising efforts. I also work closely with the leadership team, offering advice, holding them accountable, and ensuring that everything we do is truly making a difference in the communities we serve.

What originally made you want to become a trustee for AWL?

In 2019, I had the opportunity to serve as an advisor to AWL while we assessed the feasibility of establishing and expanding Action Talent. I was genuinely impressed by the leadership team, particularly our current CEO, Gary, and felt inspired by the impactful work the charity is doing. When invited to join the board, I accepted immediately without any hesitation.

What are your goals as a trustee?

As a trustee, my goals are to guide the charity in making a real, lasting impact on the communities we serve. I want to help shape our strategy, ensure our funds are used wisely, and keep the organization accountable. I’m focused on supporting fundraising strategies, building strong partnerships, and regularly evaluating the effectiveness of our work. I also aim to work closely with the leadership team to make sure they have the support they need to drive the charity’s mission forward.

How do you think your personal and employment experiences guide you as a trustee?

As someone who runs an executive search business, serves as a magistrate and school governor, and is a mother of three, I bring a unique combination of leadership, decision-making, and people skills to my role as a trustee. My business background helps me understand strategic planning, financial management, and the importance of building strong teams. As a magistrate and school governor, I’m used to making tough, fair decisions and ensuring accountability in public service. Being a mother has taught me the value of empathy, patience, and resilience, which I carry into my work as a trustee, ensuring we stay focused on making a real difference for those in need.

What do you find most rewarding about being a trustee?

What I find most rewarding about being a trustee is the direct impact we have on people’s lives, knowing that the decisions we make help alleviate poverty and create real change. It’s incredibly fulfilling to serve a cause that has such a meaningful purpose. I also love the sense of service—being able to give back in a way that aligns with my values and skills.

Equally rewarding is working alongside other amazing individuals who are just as passionate about the cause. The collaboration and shared commitment inspire me, and I constantly learn from their experiences and insights. It’s both humbling and energising to be part of such a dedicated team.

What’s the most fun thing about being a trustee?

The most fun part of being a trustee is definitely the collaborative moments, especially our away day! It’s a great opportunity to step back from the day-to-day and focus on big-picture thinking with the rest of the team.

What’s been your proudest moment as a trustee?

My proudest moment as a trustee was during a challenging period of transition for the organization, where we needed to shrink to grow. We implemented significant leadership changes to better align with our mission and improve our effectiveness. Despite the difficulties, I was proud to see how the board and the staff came together to embrace this change. Through open communication and collaboration, we navigated the process successfully. Witnessing the renewed energy and focus within the organization, along with the positive outcomes that followed, reinforced my belief in the importance of adaptive leadership and our ability to emerge stronger together.
