Client Journey – Mo*

Action West London, in partnership with the Ministry of Justice, supports 18–24-year-olds from ethnic minority backgrounds in Ealing, Hounslow, Harrow, Barnet, Brent, and Hillingdon who are currently on probation.

Mo, a 20-year-old from Hounslow, joined the programme after being referred for employment and training support. He was highly motivated to start work and build a stable, positive future for himself.

Despite his drive, Mo faced significant barriers. His criminal conviction and difficulties passing background checks made securing work a major challenge. He also struggled with providing the necessary identity documents required for modern employment. However, Mo refused to give up, remaining focused on finding meaningful work that would allow him to use his strengths.

During his one-to-one sessions, Mo expressed a strong interest in the Construction sector. He felt his physical fitness and work ethic made him a perfect fit for the industry. His Advisor took a realistic, tailored approach, first enrolling him onto a Level 1 Health & Safety course as a stepping stone to his CSCS card. Although he faced a minor setback—arriving five minutes late for his first CITB exam—he didn’t let it discourage him and immediately prepared for his retake.

While Mo was working on his qualifications, his Advisor helped him stay “work-ready.” When an opportunity arose through a personal recommendation, his Advisor provided intensive interview preparation. This support helped Mo present himself professionally and confidently, focusing on his skills and his desire to learn.

The result was a major success. Mo passed the interview and was offered a job as an Office Furniture Installer (Desk Fitter)  on a good starting wage.

Mo now working and thoroughly enjoying his new role. He is a valued member of the team and is looking forward to completing his construction qualifications and specialising in new areas within the sector. His journey proves that with resilience and the right professional support, it is possible to overcome past barriers and move into a sustainable career.

Well done, Mo!
