Client Journey – Jamal*

Action West London, in partnership with the Ministry of Justice, helps 18–24-year-olds from ethnic minority backgrounds in Ealing, Hounslow, Harrow, Barnet, Brent, and Hillingdon who are currently on probation.

It was through this specialist programme that Jamali was referred to us. Although he was motivated and ready to make positive changes, he lacked a clear direction and felt uncertain about how to overcome the barriers stopping him from finding work.

While Jamal had some previous work experience, he faced several challenges that made finding a steady job difficult. These included a lack of formal qualifications and a struggle to understand how to navigate the modern job market. Joining our Ministry of Justice (MoJ) Probation programme provided him with the structured, specialist support he needed to turn his motivation into a solid career plan.

Upon joining the project, Jamal was paired with a dedicated Advisor for regular one-to-one support. Together, they built his employability skills from the ground up. This included creating a professional CV, mastering job search techniques, and practising for interviews to help him feel more comfortable and confident when speaking to employers.

Beyond practical job-seeking skills, the programme provided Jamali with tailored guidance to handle the day-to-day barriers that were affecting his focus. By looking at career paths that matched his personal interests—specifically his passion for fitness—Jamal and his Advisor created a clear roadmap for his future.

Throughout his time on the programme, Jamali showed an incredible commitment to his progress. He attended every session and remained focused on his goal of achieving financial independence and stability.

As a result of his hard work and the support from the programme, Jamali successfully secured a job in Sports Coaching. This role has given him a vital sense of routine and a steady income. Since starting work, Jamal has reported a significant boost in his self-confidence and a much more positive outlook on his future.

Jamal’s journey shows the importance of personalised, hands-on support. His success is a fantastic example of how early intervention and partnership working can help individuals move quickly from uncertainty into sustainable, meaningful work.

Well done, Jamal!
