On Saturday 26th September, the Reduce and Recycle Hub returned to Acton Market as part of Ealing Climate Week. The day brought together local residents, repair experts, and community teams for a lively celebration of practical recycling, environmental action, and local connection.

From fixed household gadgets and upcycled clothes to music workshops and family fun, here is a roundup of what took place.

 

Mending, Fixing, and Upcycling

 

Keeping everyday items in use rather than throwing them away was at the heart of the day’s activities:

  • Action West London Electrical Repairs: Our repair team spent the day fixing residents’ small electrical appliances in return for a small donation, helping give everything from broken kettles to desk lamps a second life.

  • Ealing Repair Café: Skilled volunteers taught visitors how to mend and patch damaged clothing. They also demonstrated how to turn old fabric scraps into yarn for new craft projects.

  • Ealing Friends of the Earth: Where on site to help residents understand what changes they can do make to reduce pollution

Action West London Courses and Stallholder Opportunities

In addition to repairs, Action West London team members were on site sharing information about local training, career development, and business opportunities:

  • Electrical Repair Courses: We shared details on our accredited electrical safety, inspection, and repair training courses, designed to help local people build practical vocational skills.

  • Trading at Acton Market: Our market team spoke with aspiring entrepreneurs about opportunities to start or grow a local business by hiring a stall at Acton Market.

Waste and Recycling Information

 

Understanding what happens to our rubbish helps us make better environmental choices. Local experts were on hand to offer clear advice and answer questions:

  • West London Waste Authority: Explained how waste is processed across the region and answered questions about where our rubbish and recycling go after collection.

  • Ealing Waste Team: Shared helpful information about local recycling services, including updates on using the Stirling Road Reuse and Recycling Centre.

Health, Wellbeing, and Local Services

Community wellbeing goes hand-in-hand with a healthier environment. Local health teams joined us to offer practical guidance:

  • Ealing Stop Smoking Services: Advised residents on using reusable products to help them quit smoking, highlighting eco-friendly alternatives to single-use disposable vapes.

  • NHS Community Engagement Teams: Spoke with residents, shared local health resources, and answered questions about regional healthcare services.

Music and Family Entertainment

The Hub was also a vibrant community gathering with plenty of free entertainment for all ages:

  • DJ Masterclasses: Local young people and music enthusiasts stepped up to the decks to learn mixing skills and keep the music going throughout the day.

  • Children’s Activities: Families enjoyed free face painting and a free bouncy castle, making it a great day out for parents and children alike.
