What is a “Good Job”? Building Fairer Career Paths for Londoners

At Action West London, we are proud to partner with the Greater London Authority (GLA) on Action Inclusive Talent  a back-to-work programme that make a real difference. Our mission is to tackle labour market inequality by helping people from London’s most underrepresented communities move into stable, rewarding, and sustainable careers.

Employment is a powerful tool for social change, but not all jobs are created equal. To truly close the inequality gap, we focus on helping our participants secure what we define as a “Good Job.”

Supporting London’s Underrepresented Communities

Statistics show that certain groups in our city face significantly higher unemployment rates and are more likely to be stuck in low-paid or insecure work. Our programmes provide tailored support for:

  • Young Black men (aged 16–24)
  • Older Black men (aged 50+)
  • Black women
  • Pakistani and Bangladeshi women

We also place a specific focus on disabled individuals and those from lower socio-economic backgrounds. These overlapping disadvantages often worsen inequality in the workplace, and we are committed to breaking down these barriers.

The Definition of a “Good Job”

For a career path to be truly sustainable, it must offer security and a fair wage. When we support participants into employment, we look for roles that meet the “Good Job” criteria:

  • Fair Pay: Must pay the London Living Wage or higher.
  • Stability: A minimum of 16 hours per week with no zero-hours contracts.
  • Longevity: Employment that is continuous for at least 12 weeks.
  • Growth Potential: Ideally situated within one of London’s key growth sectors.

High-Growth Industries: Where the Opportunities Are

We don’t just want to find our participants a job for today; we want to help them build a career for the future. We are currently focusing on several priority sectors that are driving London’s economy:

  • Construction & Green Energy: Specifically green construction and the built environment.
  • Digital, Technology & Life Sciences: Innovations in tech and healthcare.
  • Creative & Cultural Industries: Tapping into London’s world-leading arts and culture.
  • Professional Services: Roles in finance, business, and international education.
  • Essential Services: Health and social care, transport, logistics, and hospitality.

By aligning our participants with these growth sectors, we ensure they are entering industries with long-term demand and progression opportunities.
