At Action West London we couldn’t do what we do without the support of local businesses and charitable donations. We are thrilled to announce that we have been accepted for a small grant donation from Hillingdon Community Trust.
Unlocking Children’s Potential through Parental Engagement (UCPPE)
This is an innovative project which will provide significant education and development benefits to primary school aged children and their parents. The project will address the lack of academic support and aspiration at home which is one of the barriers to greater academic attainment. It will engage parents with a view to encourage their greater involvement in their children’s education. The project will help parents at Hillingdon schools within the Trust wards to improve their skills and ability to effectively support their children with their learning and education and to contribute to their attainment. Children will also develop greater resilience and perseverance through a greater understanding of the cognitive processes involved in learning.
In the eight sessions parents and children will have an opportunity to explore some exciting, new ideas about the brain, learning, dealing with challenges. Participants will consider how our beliefs about what is and isn’t possible affect our ability to learn and to fulfil our full potential. Additionally, parents will develop strategies that they’ll be able to use at home with their children to encourage them to learn when they struggle.
This will be done through:
- Focused and clearly structured programme for parents and children
- fun and engaging activities for children where ideas and concepts are explored in an accessible way
- discussing and testing specific strategies based on the latest developments in pedagogy and cognitive psychology;
- a reflection journal for parents and children to use at home to reinforce the ideas covered in class
